Dr. Vivienne Ming, a serial entrepreneur, theoretical neuroscientist, and Big Data specialist, likes crunching numbers. For years, she has calculated the cost of being different—that is, how much harder do you have to work as a woman, a gay man, or a person of color, to get the same jobs and the promotions as a straight, white cisgender man? To put this in terms that policymakers can understand, she calls it a "tax."
