EWMBA ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER: JANUARY 30, 2017
OneHello
Standing Together as OneHaas!
Yes, we know it’s been a tumultuous week. But, with such extreme divisiveness happening across the country, we are proud to be part of an institution that holds inclusion as a guiding principle. With that in mind, we would like to give a shout out to all students who have been going beyond themselves and dedicating their time to strengthen community and equality at Haas and beyond. Thank you for marching, writing, and speaking up. During these times of tension and uncertainty, we ALL stand together as OneHaas.
Continue reading below to see what you and your colleagues have been up to, including initiatives to support freedom and equality, as well as opportunities for international exchanges that continue to broaden our perspectives as global leaders.
Do you have exciting projects or events to share with the EWMBA student body? Email us at ewmbaa-haas@berkeley.edu and we’ll try to get it into an upcoming newsletter! If you have photos from events, send those along too!
Dean's Seed Grants
As if balancing work and school weren't hard enough, seven brilliant EWMBA students received Dean's Seed Grants for their entrepreneurship ideas - Yi Lin Pei and Thulasi Narayan (EWMBA '17) for InnoWaste, Shannon Herline and Faith Kirkpatrick (EWMBA '18) for Lyme.Dot, and Jessica Eting, Pedro Moura, and Bill Collins (EWMBA '18) for Flourish. OneHaas Back to School Happy Hour
Thank you to those who stopped by the Back to School Happy Hour hosted by the OneHaas team on Saturday, January 21st. We had a blast and enjoyed hearing your thoughts and answering questions about VP positions. We were impressed by your ideas for the EWMBAA and by your Connect Four skills!
Berkeley-Haas Women in Leadership Conference: March 11, 2017
Don’t miss the 21st annual Berkeley-Haas Women in Leadership conference!
This year the event will focus on collaboration between men and women so that we can empower each other, inspire each other, and lead together. Whether you are a Manbassador, leading a women’s initiative at your company, or looking to gain insight into gender equality in the workplace, we invite you to join our diverse panelists and keynote speakers as we discuss topics related to biases, and work towards creating a supportive environment for everyone.
You can learn more about the conference and get your discounted early bird tickets here:
Berkeley-Haas Women’s March
Last Saturday, a group of EWMBA students led by Melanie Davidson and Tess Peppers (EWMBA '19) marched around campus to show that nothing (not even afternoon classes) can stop Haasies from making their voices heard when it comes to equal rights (and what voices they had!)
Thank you, ladies, for the powerful initiative. And a shout out to the manbassadors who showed up with some wonderfully creative signs!
Berkeley-Haas Israel Trek
Israel iTrek is a student-led visit to Israel, with the goal of introducing Berkeley-Haas students to the Israeli start-up culture in high tech, biotech, agriculture, and social impact areas. This is a good opportunity to get to know the “Start-Up” nation, deeply understand the unique culture of Israel, tour some of the most incredible sites with historical, social and religious significance, and build some amazing friendships! We have an incredible line up with startups, C-level executives / founders, and VCs, and policy-makers. The dates of the trip (April 23-29) and the agenda are locked & loaded. If you would like to secure your spot, please email Michael Ouchida (michael_ouchida@berkeley.edu), and he will provide you with the details on how to pay the $500 deposit.
This trek is being led and organized by 3 EMBA students – Marina Levi, Michael Ouchida, and Meghan Sinclair.
Petition to Dean Lyons Condemning Trump's Immigration Ban
As many of you are aware, on Friday, January 27, Donald Trump signed an executive order that indefinitely suspended entry to the United States for Syrian refugees, as well as blocked entry for citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.
This action has not only provoked worldwide outrage, but also directly affects our community. Our classmates at Haas, and throughout the wider University of California, Berkeley campus, are being refused entry to return to school, or cannot leave the country for business or family trips.
Our colleagues in the Full-time MBA program have begun a petition to Dean Lyons, asking him to join forces with Deans from other business schools to publicly condemn this executive order.
Please sign your name here to lend your support to this cause!
Are you, your friends, or family being directly impacted by this executive order? WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! We are collecting stories from across the Haas community to further strengthen the petition to Dean Lyons. Please write ewmbaa-haas@berkeley.edu with your stories, and we will make sure they make it to the petition organizers.
