Welcome back from HaasVegas, HMC! This week's newsletter contains a spotlight on the splendid Neda Bazofti, as well as internship and full-time roles, so pay attention! Make sure to join us on #club-marketing on slack for the latest updates!
In Case You Missed It
Last Tuesday (September 28), Retail Brew's The Checkout explored the lifecycle of a consumer packaged good (CPG) product—beginning with consumer insights and behaviors that drive the idea, to the packaging, distribution, and marketing of that product. The event featured their executive editor, Josh Sternberg, and PepsiCo’s Vice President, Innovation & Capabilities Emily Silver for a fun conversation about how seemingly random products make their way to shelves. Following that discussion, their sponsor Amazon Advertising’s Head of Grocery Advertising Sales Bob Coon sat down with Morning Brew’s Associate Director of Branded Content Mike Beaumonte to discuss the evolving nature of purchasing decisions and habits in the grocery space, the impact of these shifts in consumer behaviors on grocery brands, and the importance of a thoughtful marketing mix.
For anyone who missed the event but would like to view the recording, link is HERE.
For aspiring marketers (and more broadly, those who want to keep up to date on industry trends within Food/CPG/Retail), I highly recommend signing up for the Retail Brew newsletter. It's sent 1-2x per week to your inbox and a very fast read. Here is a referral link from our very own Co-President, Cindy Liu!
Spotlight
Neda Bazofti, FTMBA 22, MBA Brand Intern at Allbirds
1.) What did your day-to-day look like as a Brand intern at Allbirds?
As an intern, it varied each day! I had 3 main projects for the summer that were all very cool (reach out if you have specific questions about them). Most of my summer was spent on market and competitive research, consumer surveys, user testing, and data analysis. One of my summer projects was around a YouTube strategy, so I also spent a lot of time on YouTube (which made me feel both unproductive and extremely productive - lol).
2.) What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced in your role?
Ambiguity with my projects — I was lucky enough to have a manager who trusted me and gave me complete ownership of my projects to figure everything out on my own, but they were all huge learning experiences for me so it felt pretty stressful at times.
3.) What has been your experience with Allbirds’ company culture?
Allbirds is extremely mission-driven and it shows within the company culture. That was something that was very important for me in my internship search and I felt that Allbirds truly emulated what I was looking for in an organization. Also — their SF office is really cool. They have an amazing rooftop where they hosted weekly happy hours and threw a huge summer bash. They also have an entire floor dedicated to their different materials and shoe styles, with samples lined up along a wall.
4.) Any advice you have for students who are interested in CPG/Retail, or Allbirds specifically?
Test out your hypothesis of CPG/Retail throughout the year with consulting project opportunities that come up. Allbirds is pretty small internally (~150 at HQ) so that left a lot of room for ownership. If you want an extremely structured summer, look at larger CPGs. If you thrive in ambiguous situations and smaller environments, Allbirds is a great spot to test out whether you are invested in the CPG/Retail space. For me, it really solidified that I want to move into the consumer good space.
5.) What do you like to do in your spare time (when you’re not juggling being a student and a full-time intern!)?
Huge Arsenal fan! If you happen to watch, I will probably talk your head off about sports woes. Besides that, I love to bake, read, travel, and cry about my foot’s stress fracture ƒÿó.
