Thanksgiving in Berkeley
I’m not sure how first semester went by so quickly, but the holidays are fast approaching! As a native Midwesterner, I’m still coming to terms with the fact that, in Berkeley, leaves change color in November - it really throws off my “seasonal awareness.” I am fully aware now, however, that Thanksgiving is this Thursday! I am also very excited about it! Many students travel to see family and friends over the long weekend, but my husband and I are staying here and celebrating the day with our “Berkeley family” – friends from Haas, of course. This will be our second year doing Thanksgiving with this fun crew, so we should have the food and festivities down to a science.
We’re starting the day in San Francisco running in the annual Turkey Trot (a 5 mile fun run). I suppose we may need to find some gaudy holiday gear to fit in with all the costumed runners…my husband has been looking diligently for a good turkey costume... After the run, we’ll head back to Berkeley to start cooking! Everyone is bringing a couple side dishes (family recipes) to share and our generous hosts are taking care of the turkey – my mouth is watering just thinking about the stuffing and sweet potatoes! Games and drinks are sure to follow…once the “food coma” passes, that is…
Although it can be tough not spending the holiday with family, I wouldn’t trade this new Thanksgiving tradition for anything! We’ve been so fortunate to meet great people and develop strong friendships with classmates and partners. I can’t wait for Thanksgiving to get here!
All the best to you and yours,
Laura
