What is Dragon Boating?
For those unfamiliar with the sport, dragon boating simply put, is a boat of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steers person paddling to cross the finish faster than their competition. It's a team sport in its purest form that encompasses the elements of power, speed, synchronization and endurance.
What if I've never paddled before?
No experience is required! We will be registered in the novice division, meaning the teams in our divisions will not have more than 3 practices before the race.
What is the time commitment?
There will be 3 practices (actual dates TBD, but likely Sunday, August 27th; Saturday, September 9th; and Sunday, September 17th). Practices will either be at Lake Merced, San Francisco or Jack London Square, Oakland and will be approximately 2.5 hours each. You should be able to make at least 2 practices as it is a team sport.
Race day is Saturday, September 23rd. You must be available the full day. Each team will race in 3 heats throughout the day and the times will be determined by how we place in each heat.
Does it cost anything?
Registration is $1,000 for the boat. This includes 3 practice times with a coach and steersperson, paddles and PFDs (Personal Flotation Device), and race entry fee. Jersey, food and snack costs TBD.
I'm asking to collect $50/person but ideally, we'll be able to fundraise and/or find sponsorship to cover all costs; at which point your $50 or left over portion will be refunded. Purchase your ticket today to reserve your spot on the team!
Can my significant other participate?
Unfortunately, we can only roster 24 paddlers. At this time, the event is only open to currently enrolled Haas students.
This year, we have to have 10 Female and 10 Male paddlers in every heat. As such, I will shoot to roster 12 Female and 12 Male paddlers but that ratio may change depending on the level of interest.
