Description

How we spend our money is a reflection of our values. In the US, we spend $620 billion annually on public education, or 9% of GDP. The sector employs 3.2 million teachers, plus administrators and support staff. Despite high funding levels compared to other OECD countries, the US public education system struggles to deliver on quality. Where does all the money go? Who decides? In our kickoff 2018 event, we talk with four education leaders making fiscal and operational decisions every day.

On Thursday, February 22, join the Haas Education Club and the Haas Policy & Politics Club to learn what is going behind the scenes at the local level. Following our panel, we'll host a casual networking happy hour for students and our guest speakers from 7:30-8:00.

Our panel will be moderated by Om Chitale (FTMBA 2018) and feature:
  • Delphine Sherman: Delphine serves as Chief Financial Officer at Aspire Public Schools, a network of 40+ community-based charter schools in California and Tennessee. She will speak about insights gained through her role overseeing a $240 million budget, with a specific focus on the opportunities and challenges charter schools face in the funding space.
  • Jeff Kang: Jeff currently supports state and district leaders to make affordable high speed broadband access a reality for all schools at EducationSuperHighway. Jeff was a former Broad Resident who led the district-wide transformation to a weighted student funding model at Prince George’s County Public Schools, a rapidly growing district outside of DC, and serves as the treasurer for the Board of Directors at Education Pioneers.
  • Dan Lindheim: An Assistant Professor of Practice at the Goldman School of Public Policy, Dan serves on the Audit Committee for both Berkeley and Oakland Unified School Districts. For over a decade, he chaired the planning and oversight committee of the BUSD parcel tax, which accounts for over 25% of the BUSD budget and informs most BUSD budget and policy.
  • Alma Rico: Alma serves as Chief Operating Officer of Voices College-Bound Language Academies. A Broad Resident, Alma builds and maintains the operational and financial infrastructure necessary to support and oversee the growing network.
