Tradition Behind The "Big Game"

Big Game is the name given to the California–Stanford football rivalry. It is an American college football rivalry game played by the California Golden Bears football team of the University of California, Berkeley and the Stanford Cardinal football team of Stanford University.

First played in 1892, it is one of the oldest college rivalries in the United States. The tradition is older even than the Haas School of Business! Future president Herbert Hoover was one of the founding organizers of the event when he was still an undergraduate student at Stanford University. 

A core part of the rivalry, the Stanford Axe first made its appearance in 1989 at a Stanford pep rally. In the following year, the Stanford Axe was reintroduced at another pep rally only to be stolen by Cal students. Amid a downtown San Francisco chase, the handle of the axe was broken off. Stanford students stole back the axe in 1930 by disguising themselves as Cal students at a Cal pep rally. Forever after, it has become a tradition to transfer custody of the axe based on the winner of the Big Game. 

Current Cal alumni in the NFL include Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff, Dejaun Jackson, Keenan Allen, and Elijah Hicks.
