UC Berkeley Haas School of Business | Groups

ACRE is a program within Haas Career Services targeted specifically at graduate students pursuing a real estate career.  It builds on the Haas School’s  and Fisher Center’s strong relationships within the Bay Area as well as national and international real estate communities to provide students with extraordinary exposure to industry leaders.

The goals of the ACRE program are to:

  • Enhance students’ understanding of the unique structure and characteristics of the real estate industry, and
  • Provide access to local real estate professionals.
Real estate is a highly segmented industry with great diversity in function (development, acquisitions, lending, etc.), location (urban, suburban, sub-markets), and product (office, residential, retail, etc.). The process a real estate student must go through to figure out which career path fits one’s personality and skills is often daunting. The ACRE program is designed to help students focus their career search in real estate and provide a bridge to the professional real estate community.

The ACRE Program integrates available resources and includes:
  • One-on-One Consultation –The ACRE Program Manager is available for advising and coaching on the real estate career search to help students choose a focus and design a customized career development path.

  • Real Estate Speaker Series –Held in the fall, this one unit course is a weekly discussion led by a local real estate professional about the trends going on in their segment of the industry and what career opportunities may be available. Through this student-led course, students become familiar with industry characteristics, real estate career path strategies, and current trends in real estate industry segments. This discussion series is open to all real estate graduate students.

  •  Real Estate Teach-In – This half day seminar is available to incoming real estate students and is designed to introduce students to the vocabulary and valuation principals of real estate. Students walk through two simple valuation cases (one investment of a current commercial asset, one development of a multi-family residential asset).

  •  Professionals-in-Residence – During the spring term, 8 - 10 senior real estate professionals come to the Haas School of Business and hold office hours with real estate students. This provides students the opportunity for on-campus informational interview sessions with professionals in fields of interest

  •  Shadow Visits – Real estate professionals host a student for a half day or full day visit to their real estate firm (or project site) where the student can meet with various professionals and gain a sense of what the company does and what their host’s day-to-day job responsibilities are.

  •  Property Tours – Local real estate firms provide a “walk-through” of their project site providing background information on the development and operational details of the site.

  •  Real Estate Industry 101 – Returning real estate students share information on their summer internship experience with new students.  Details on internship search methods, interview processes, and day-to-day work assignments are provided.
