Brain Power

A Haas MBA alumn reached out to us to pilot a new product her partner is working on. Emily Brechlin (FTMBA '20) is in Product Growth at Facebook, and her partner, Gino Alberto is working on a group video startup called Sockhop. They're looking for early users for feedback and testing.

The product is a group video app built for fun and socializing. It's on a physics simulator, so your video bubble can move around and bump into others. You also have proximity volume, which means you can adjust your sound circle to have conversations with people nearby in the shared space. This is intended to replicate how we hang out in real life. Along with the physics and sound circles, the team created low-stakes games (soccer, golf, hackysack), drawing, and customization options for your video bubble and backgrounds. Perpetual rooms are always-on, so folks can drop in and hang out - it's like the virtual MBA lounge!

The team is excited to introduce Sockhop to Haas as a way for the class to hang out and socialize. They went ahead and created a room for us that we can use for free. Check it out: https://sockhop.me/room/Haas-MBA-Lounge.

And if you're interested in learning more, you can visit their homepage at home.sockhop.me. They only ask that we provide feedback - which can be submitted directly through the Feedback button on the website or by emailing info@sockhop.me. And if you want to connect with Gino directly, feel free to email him at gino@sockhop.me.

Time for the new Spotlight Feature!

Moving forward, the HTC Newsletter will include a spotlight feature of a Haas student with tech experience! The hope for this segment is that it will facilitate networking among FT and EWMBA students, and will simply help us learn more about tech from our fellow classmates. What better way to kick off than with a feature of our very own EWMBA Marketing VP, Pulkit Agrawal!

Pulkit Agrawal, Apple Program Manager

1. What does a typical day look like for you as a program manager at Apple?

My day to day involves 3-4 hours of project meetings with Cupertino cross-functional team members (Engineering, design and operations) and presentation updates to Executives. I usually also have a few meetings in the evening (after 5pm) with my Asia Pacific team members on manufacturing issues and factory activities.

2. What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced in your role?

Some of the biggest challenges has been to come up with innovative manufacturing solutions to meet Apple’s stringent design and quality specification. Since the pandemic, it has also been a challenge to remotely troubleshoot and fix the design/manufacturing issues while keeping the project on the aggressive schedule.

3. What has been your experience with Apple's company culture?

Overall, I feel Apple’s culture is very supportive with focus on innovation and lot of freedom and ownership of work. With that said, Apple’s culture is also very fast paced with aggressive product deadlines and therefore maintaining a good work life balance can sometimes be a challenge.

4. What advice can you share with students who are pivoting into tech?

One advice I would say is to really understand the role you are applying for by networking with people who work there. There are many opportunities for MBA grads in Tech companies and finding the right fit is critical to enjoy the work you do.

5. What do you like to do in your spare time (when you're not juggling being a student and a full-time employee!)?

In my spare time I like to binge watch TV shows, listen to music or play board games with friends. Pre-pandemic I also loved to travel and explore new cities and national parks.
