Spotlight on Abhi Roy!

Abhi Roy, FTMBA 22, Ex-Oracle Account Executive

1. What did your day-to-day look like as an Account Executive at Oracle?

In my role, I was responsible for growing Oracle’s existing cloud business through upselling, cross-selling, referrals, and renewals, specifically with F500 clients. My day to day included onboarding new clients, explaining upgrade paths to existing clients, prospecting for new leads, strategy meetings with cross functional partners (field sales, product management, customer success, marketing, etc.), and analyzing product adoption data.

2. What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced in your role?

Often times I had to negotiate more internally than with customers to close a sale. Every piece of a deal went through a robust approval system involving multiple stakeholders that required a bit of politicking. Externally, it was definitely a challenge building a business case for each stakeholder or department involved, building a custom solution based on what they us they need (which might be different from their actual needs), and then pushing the deal through the red tape of a F500 procurement process while fending off competition.

3. What has been your experience with Oracle's company culture?

Oracle has over 130,000 employees, so it really depends on your specific role, business unit, and team. I can say that my team and organization was very competitive while being fun, with strong mentoring in place. I loved the socials our team did when we hit our sales goals, including VR, indoor kart racing, and watching Tiger Woods up close!

4. Any advice you have for students who are interested in Tech, or Oracle specifically?

Oracle has so many different divisions that networking with the specific team you're interested in is key. It was very difficult to break in without an internal referral. Be curious and ask people whose roles you want genuine questions about their day to day and what value you bring. If you are aiming for a non-technical role like sales or marketing, don't count yourself out if you lack prior tech experience, but it is necessary to highlight your interest and transferrable skills

5. What do you like to do in your spare time (when you’re not juggling being a student and a full-time employee!)?

Ever since I was a kid, I have been really passionate about playing the drums! At Oracle, I even made an Oracle band with some co-workers on my floor and we performed at sales kickoffs and company events. I would love to start a band at Haas as well :).
