Subject: HCF Weekly Newsletter

Dear HCF,

Hope you can join us at Terry Taylor's for a BBQ this Thursday at 6:30pm!  Please sign up here to arrange rides and RSVP if you haven't done so already.  Drivers, you are responsible for coordinating with your passengers on a meeting time / place.  It's a ~15-20 minute drive from campus (address: 125 York Drive, Piedmont).

As we begin Fall B, we'd love to check-in and see how you all are doing in your journeys at Haas and with God.  Please email Jake or myself with any updates, prayer requests, or feedback on the first quarter of HCF this year.  If there's anything you'd like to see or any way that we can support you, let us know.

On that note, we're trying to find a better time for an on-campus prayer/fellowship time that works for more people.  Please fill out this when2meet if you're interested in coming and we'll format the time based on the requests of the people who can come.  Robert (FTMBA 17) is also planning a meet-up with the law school the week of 10/23.  Please fill out this when2meet if you're interested in attending that.

Enjoy the rest of this beautiful Fall day!

Grace and Peace,

Anthony, Jake, and Megan

Weekly Reflection - Freya Lee (FTMBA '17)

As first-years' Fall A finals crept up, Career Week loomed in the background. We all chose to come to business school for a reason, and amidst the hectic nature of everything, I found myself forgetting why I was here.

In preparing for my final Lead Comms inspirational speech, I rediscovered an exercise I learned from Donald Miller, author of Blue Like Jazz. Imagine yourself at the end of your life. Ask yourself, if you want to live a meaningful life, what do you wish you'd have done by the end of your life? In reviewing your life story, how do you see yourself living out God's story? What is God doing in the world, and how do we fit into this larger story? Because our stories, our subplots in God's grand story, matter.

When I first did that exercise several years ago, it helped me take a step back and evaluate the negative and positive turns of my entire life thus far, the recurring themes, and the ways God had redeemed and continued to redeem the negative turns in my life. I was humbled by the ways the Lord had been loving me and molding me even before I came to know Him. I was reassured that, even with the injustice and brokenness I see around me, God was alive and moving.

The exercise also served to remind me that I am not defined by my career or things I accomplish (or do not accomplish) in business school. My worth comes from our Lord Jesus Christ, who died in order for us to truly live. That is an incredibly exciting -- and freeing! -- piece of knowledge. Through Fall A finals, I held onto a few verses to remind me about what it means to be part of God's story:
  • 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 (NIV) - "For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again."
  • Isaiah 41:9-10 (NIV) - "I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Praises and Prayer Requests

PRAISE for God's grand story, that He is redeeming our broken world day by day, person by person.

PRAYER for deeper fellowship with God and one another.

Please submit your own praises and prayer requests to your co-presidents and specify whether we have permission to include them in the newsletter.  Even if you don't want them to be public, we would be so delighted to share in your blessings and lift up your burdens.

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19
