Dear HCF,
For new students, welcome to Haas and to Haas Christian Fellowship! We look forward to getting to know you better and in walking this business school journey together as brothers and sisters in Christ. Please come to our table at the Club Fair on Thursday to meet us in person! For returning students, welcome back :).
We're planning an exciting year with HCF around the theme of Authenticity. In short, we want to 1. create a space for authentic community and 2. develop a theology for authenticity as a Christian (what specific resources and goals do Christians have around authenticity?). More to come in future newsletters and at our first events of the year!
I just want to highlight two major announcements for the upcoming weeks. First, if you're looking for a church, at least four of us will be meeting at Philz Coffee at 9:30am before the Christ Church 10:30am service. We know it can be tough to establish a church home, so come chat with us beforehand and we can attend the service together. Second, we really want to emphasize the importance of establishing rhythms (church, prayer, Bible reading, journaling, spiritual friendships) as early as possible, because it really doesn't get any easier as the school year continues. To aid with that process, we're meeting at 8:15am on Thursday mornings in F430 to pray together regularly this semester. We usually do a combination of Bible reading and praying for each other, Haas, and the world. Come and let us support you!
We're so thankful that you are here and wish you a blessed start to the year. Please let us know if there's any other ways that we can support you. May this year be a time of growth and renewal for each one of you.
Grace and Peace,
Anthony, Jake, and Megan
Weekly Reflection - Megan Wong (FTMBA '16)
(Also in the spirit of authenticity, we ask someone in our community to write a short reflection each week. We'll start with our co-presidents so you can get to know us a bit better, but if you'd like to share, please email megan_wong@mba.berkeley.edu with your reflection and I'd love to add it to our next newsletter!)
When I first came to Haas, I remember feeling excited to start a new chapter in life, but also lonely, afraid, anxious, and confused. I questioned whether Haas was the right place for me, whether I came too early in my career, and whether I would ever fit into an extroverted business school culture. I didn’t even have the words to articulate how I felt when well-meaning people asked how I was doing.
I want to share a few thoughts that comforted me then and still comfort me now. I hope and pray that God would impress these upon your heart and that you would know the great immensity of His unending love for you in the next year.
- God knows me. I feel lonely when I feel like no one knows me (the real me, not the two-minute-introduction me). But God knows me even better than I know myself. He has numbered every day of my life and knows every thought, emotion, and action before it even happens. How can I be lonely with such a faithful and all-knowing friend?
- God loves me. God knows my every failure and wrong (the things I don’t tell people in my two-minute-introductions) and He still loves me. He loves me and will never stop loving me, no matter how many internships I get rejected from, how many events I attend or skip, how many times I run away from Him. Nothing in heaven or earth can separate me from His love.
- God’s promises never fail. He has promised an unfading glory, an imperishable inheritance, an all-fulfilling relationship, a renewed earth, and much more. He has promised good to me, more good than I can know.
We all need to hear these words over and over again, especially in a busy place like Haas. I encourage each of you to establish a regular space and time for God remind you how much he knows and loves you in the next year. Crazy as business school is, it can also be a time of deep refreshment and clarity. “Seek and you will find,” He has promised.
Praises and Prayer Requests
PRAISE for each person receiving this newsletter.
PRAYER for smooth transitions and deep spiritual friendships for the FT 2017 and EW 2018 classes.
Please submit your own praises and prayer requests to your co-presidents and specify whether we have permission to include them in the newsletter. Even if you don't want them to be public, we would be so delighted to share in your blessings and lift up your burdens.
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19
