Subject: HCF Weekly Newsletter & Community Group Location Change Tonight

Dear HCF,

Happy Sunday!  Please note a change in location for our community group tonight.  We will be meeting just a few blocks away from our normal location at 2237 Cedar Street (Cedar & Spruce) in North Berkeley.

Thanks to our panelists and attendees on Thursday for sharing about their experiences as Christians at Haas!  Pastor Jason Yum from Christ Church shared a wonderful message about authenticity, vulnerability, and rest (among other things).  You can find a 15-minute recording here and I would highly recommend listening...the message really hit home for me at least.

Finally, we have a BBQ scheduled at Operations Professor Terry Taylor's on Thursday 10/22 during Career Week!  Please save the date and sign up to arrange rides / coordinate dessert and drinks here.

Have a great week, friends.

Grace and Peace,

Anthony, Jake, and Megan

Weekly Reflection - Dorothy Yang (FTMBA '16)

I ended my first year of b-school completely exhausted. I could feel a sense of "spiritual entropy" in my heart that was starting to affect all aspects of my life. I was desperate for more of God but perhaps not desperate enough to have spent more time with Him.  This summer, I was determined to take time to figure out a better way of juggling things - do more with less, focus on the things that are most important, and be re-centered in my identity in our Maker.

I love how God truly meets us in our needs and is faithful to us unconditionally. This summer, my church started a series on the importance of rest in our Lord!  During the series, I realized that I often "rest" by vegging out - for example, watching cheesy YouTube videos until late at night, only to still feel "exhausted" afterwards.

What does it look like to truly rest?  I started reading a book called "Invitation to Silence and Solitude" by Ruth Barton. Each chapter guides me to take a few deep breaths and relax before beginning to practice complete silence and simply be.  It's the idea of letting go and letting God. :)  As someone who normally can't stand silence, this has not been easy, but I feel rested and refreshed afterwards because I have sat at the feet of Jesus.  I have a better sense of self.

Recently, I've been asking God to perform some much-needed spiritual surgery on my heart.  I spend the moments of silence listening to the areas in my life that God wants to surface.  Some questions that have come up during those times...what is my purpose here at business school and what am I doing about it? Would I be willing to let go of x job, y activity, z leadership position, etc knowing that who I am in God is enough?

Maybe complete silence sounds really daunting or scary to you (it did when I first considered it!). I definitely don't have it all figured out and am still learning the appropriate rhythm of practicing silence. What's been most encouraging is that being silent has reminded me to take a good look at the things I "chase after," especially considering what b-school culture typically values.  Even better, I'm reminded that God's love for me and all of us isn't dependent on any of those pursuits.

If you're willing, I encourage you to take time this week to simply "be still," whether that involves silence or not.   I hope you experience the love of God and are rejuvenated by His presence. :)

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

Praises and Prayer Requests

PRAISE for God's love and rest.

PRAYER for us to experience that love and rest in deep and regular ways, on our own and in community.

Please submit your own praises and prayer requests to your co-presidents and specify whether we have permission to include them in the newsletter.  Even if you don't want them to be public, we would be so delighted to share in your blessings and lift up your burdens.

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19
