Dear HCF,
Praying for perspective and vision for each of you in the upcoming week as work picks up. We have many events coming up for HCF, but don't feel pressure to attend all of them. Assess what you're feeling called to go to and make it a point to go!
With that, here are some events and save-the-dates :).
1. Very interesting talk coming up this Thursday 11/12 on God, Money, and the Pursuit of Happiness featuring a Haas professor and a Stanford GSB professor. Check out the FB event here for more details. This would be a great event to invite friends!
2. Join us for an HCF pre-Thanksgiving Dinner next Sunday 11/15 at Dorothy's place in South Berkeley. RSVP here so we can get an accurate headcount for food :).
3. And if you just can't get enough Thanksgiving food and fellowship, come to the joint grad fellowship dinner on Thursday 11/19. Veritas, Christian Health and Medical Professionals and Students (CHAMPS), Haas Christian Fellowship (HCF), 2C, and Christians at Boalt (CAB) are co-sponsoring the event and there will be a speaker on faith and work from UCSF. RSVP here if you can make it!
4. Our very own Anthony Patterson is co-chairing the Believers in Business conference (Feb 19-20) this year, the largest student-run national conference that equips and encourages Christian MBA students and graduates to live out their lives and careers for the glory of God. Register now for the early bird rate and feel free to contact any of us for more info.
Grace and Peace,
Anthony, Jake, and Megan
Weekly Reflection - Jake Qian (FTMBA '16)
It's been a while since I've put some solid time into prayer and reflection- since September 20th to be specific. We've all heard that at Haas, our most valuable resource is our time. When I'm not being mindful or reflective, my time becomes reminiscent of how Tim Keller describes work (the topic and book we're going through in our weekly community group) in our fallen world: fruitless, pointless, selfish. I jump from one fun thing to the next while putting in the minimal amount of work necessary to get through the tedious work I don't want to do. It's interesting because it's work that I do care about, but have slowly become chores when I forget who I am in God, and the purpose I have in him.
I truly believe in the power of design thinking in improving our world, yet teaching it as a GSI feels tedious and fruitless when I forget that I'm living for more than just myself. I believe deeply in equity and fairness, but so much of what I work on for the Gender Equity Initiative feels boring and pointless when I don't take time to reflect on my true purpose. Time with God reminds me of that which I am called to, and how joyful that can be.
Praises and Prayer Requests
PRAISE for the opportunity to be here at Haas!
PRAYER for us to become more and more aware of the greatness and surety of our faith.
Please submit your own praises and prayer requests to your co-presidents and specify whether we have permission to include them in the newsletter. Even if you don't want them to be public, we would be so delighted to share in your blessings and lift up your burdens.
