Weekly Reflection - Kyle Clark (FTMBA '17)
I didn't know the real meaning of FOMO (fear of missing out) until I started at Haas. Even before Week Zero started, I had the feeling that I was missing important opportunities and events left and right. I found myself looking to my classmates for cues and guidance as to what I should do and who I should be. It should have come as no surprise that many of them looked right back at me for the same reason, and yet I felt that I had nothing of significance to share with them. If anyone knew what we were supposed to be doing here, it certainly wasn't me!
I have experienced the Haas community as compassionate and relaxed, and yet it seems as if the pursuit of a business degree and whatever fame and glory may come beyond the achievement of that pursuit is anything but. Should I go to Haas Vegas or Haas Boats or both? Am I the kind of person who will excel at marketing or consulting or business development, or should I just go to every tech meet and greet and hope they'll tell me what to do? How was I supposed to know signups for the Nike info session went out three weeks ago?!
I look around the Haas courtyard at the smiling faces of my classmates; I hear, with some incredulity, my own voice as I tell prospective students and friends just how fun business school is, how everything is always haasome, all the time. And yet I see beneath all of our calm demeanors a whirlwind of anxiety about what our future holds: who are we, and who should we be? What are we doing here, and what should we be doing?
I've learned a great deal over the past few weeks of Fall A, but one of the most important things I've experienced has been the dawning realization that I'm me, and that that's okay. Think about it - I am me. There is no other me. What if the greatest contribution I can make to my classmates during my time at Haas is to just be me, all the time? What if there is no FOMO, only whatever I'm doing right here, right now. There is no comparison, because comparison between two unique persons who serve different purposes and who are intended for different things is impossible. When you think about it, the future world in which we all just be ourselves and live our own lives to the fullest is one that is full of unique people doing unique things, each in their own way. What a world to live in!
I know I have a long road ahead of me, and one of the the most exciting parts of that journey is taking every step as me: fading-ginger-faux-hawk hair, expressive, high-energy (okay - loud), people-focused, struggling-with-t-stats-and-aggregate-demand-curves me. The other exciting part is watching you do the same, because I have no idea what creative thoughts you'll share with the world based on your own unique perspective and point of view. I'm looking forward to finding out.
Galatians 6:4-5 (The Message translation) - "Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don't be impressed with yourself. Don't compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life."
