Dear HCF,
We're almost there! A couple of neat opportunities this week.
HCF was blessed with a generous grant this year to sponsor a Finals Encouragement initiative with MBAA. We've done most of the organizing, but need your help in encouraging our classmates through this stressful time! Cheer them on by writing encouraging notes and verses on our Encouragement Boards in the MBAA Lounge or by passing out FREE YOGURTLAND (yes, you read that right) in the courtyard on Wednesday. RSVP if you can help pass out Yogurtland on Wednesday so we can send you more details.
We also have two exciting opportunities to fellowship with brothers and sisters in different departments and at different schools. RSVP here for a grad fellowship event with Boalt (CAB), Haas (HCF), Optometry (2C), and Public Health (CHAMPS). And RSVP here for a joint dinner on Friday in SF with HCF and Stanford GSB's Christian community.
Finally, can you help us take our 2-minute survey about the Christians in Business class for next year? We're trying to get as much planning done as possible before the end of the year and would love your input.
Grace and Peace,
Anthony, Jake, and Megan
Weekly Reflection - Sherry Wu (FTMBA '15)
I have spent most of my adult life engaged in an internal debate about whether or not meaning exists. The existence of meaning to me implies the existence of a higher power, which is not something I am quite ready to accept. As Charles Bukowski puts it, “For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can’t readily accept the God formula, the big answers don’t remain stone-written.”
For some Haasies, meaning does come from a higher power. For others, it does not. Regardless of our individual opinions on meaning, meaning plays a very central role in our lives at Haas. CMG encourages us to seek meaning in our careers. Our coursework trains us to think about what it means to place social and environmental outcomes on par with financial outcomes. We all find meaning and empathy in our relationships with each other. I have no doubt that this emphasis on meaning is what makes Haas so special, and I feel quite privileged to have been a part of this unique and remarkable community. I can only hope that the next chapter in my life is filled with so many wonderful people who inspire me to think deeply, wonder fully, and pursue meaning with all my heart.
P.S. You might wonder what a non-Christian is doing in HCF. I joined because faith is quite important to my partner, and I wanted to do as much as I could to learn about Christianity and be supportive. Thank you for allowing me to be the guest reflector this week :)
Praises and Prayer Requests
PRAISE for our Finals Encouragement grant and that we have the opportunity to do something positive at a campus-wide level. Praise for the perfect peace that is ours in Christ Jesus.
PRAYER for healing for Alicea's mother and for strength and hope for Alicea during this difficult time. Prayer that God's name would be known and that we would be lights this week as people gear up for the end of the semester.
Please submit your own praises and prayer requests to your co-presidents and specify whether we have permission to include them in the newsletter. Even if you don't want them to be public, we would be so delighted to share in your blessings and lift up your burdens.
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19
