Dear HCF,
We had a wonderful first faith/work discussion on Every Good Endeavor last night, remembering the inherent goodness of work and exploring our own motivations to pursue our past and future careers. If you weren't able to join, but would still like to see our discussion guide, check out the notes here. And come talk to Jake or myself if you want to talk through any of these issues together!
We will have two more book discussions before the end of the year, tentatively on Sunday April 19 and Sunday May 3. Until then, let's continue to encourage one another to do as Paul says in Colossians: "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."
Also, join us for Easter dinner on Sunday April 5, 3-6pm! RSVP below so that we can get an accurate headcount.
Grace and Peace,
Anthony, Jake, and Megan
Weekly Reflection - Frances Fan (FTMBA '16)
Two weeks ago, it was my birthday. My husband and I had a simple dinner at home, followed by sharing a small cake. Candles lighted, as I closed my eyes, things that happened in the past year flashed across my mind. It was a tough year for me, but above all the emotions such as sadness and regrets, I still felt full of blessings and gratefulness as I acquired so much strength and comfort from the Lord during the darkest period of my life.
Around this same time last year, I had the most unforgettable birthday in my life with my father, who was very ill then. I felt so helpless because I could do nothing but pray and accompany him as much as I could. And of course, I totally forgot my birthday. However, even when he could barely stay in conscious for 3-4 hours a day at that time, he still wanted to give his daughter a birthday surprise by asking someone else to buy a birthday cake for me. We took our last photo together, smiling. When he asked me to make a wish, I knew it would be my last birthday to have him with me, so I prayed to the Lord for relief and strength for him. The Lord responded me with such a miracle that in the last few days of his life, he was so peaceful without feeling any pain, which was almost impossible for a terminal cancer patient like him. Praise the Lord! For me, I would also have never been able to walk through my fear to death, desperation about tomorrow, and questions on the meaning of life after this, had it not been for the Lord’s wise words in the Bible. It is such a great comfort to know that we will see our loved ones again one day and we will be with Christ forever. I am so blessed to find my own peace in the Lord Jesus because “… In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
When I came to the US, I started to pray every day before I go to sleep. I really enjoy it for two reasons. First, by talking to the Lord about what I have done during the day, I am able to end my day with a smile because I find that happiness always outweigh anything else. Secondly, I usually don’t ask for things from the Lord but appreciate for what he has prepared for me. By doing that, I leave all the results to the Lord and don’t need to worry about the uncertainties in the future because “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” [Matthew 6:34]
In the end, I want to say HCF is one of the best thing the Lord has prepared for me at Haas, where I got to know so many lovely sisters and brothers and have got so much help from you. May the grace of the Lord be with you!
Praises and Prayer Requests
PRAISE for the beauty of creation and the goodness of our work. Praise for those who have found internships and jobs for the upcoming year.
PRAYER that this community would be a light internally and externally as we remind one another of the gospel daily. Prayer that we would rejoice in our work, through all the ups and downs.
Please submit your own praises and prayer requests to your co-presidents and specify whether we have permission to include them in the newsletter. Even if you don't want them to be public, we would be so delighted to share in your blessings and lift up your burdens.
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19
