Alumni Spotlight: Ennis Olson
Ennis Olson, Global Innovation Portfolio Manager, Food@Google
Tell us about yourself! (Where are you from? When did you graduate from Haas? Where are you working now?)
I’m originally from a rural farming community in Washington State, but lived in SF for 20 years now where it’s home to my husband and I and our two dogs. I graduated from Haas in 2016 and now work at Google leading innovation for the Global Food Team. (Side note: my last couple roles - first as one of the innovation leaders at Visa and now Google have come directly from my Haas network!).
What does your day to day at work look like?
My day-to-day is a split between tactical execution and strategic development. I founded the innovation discipline for my current team and have built processes and capabilities of innovation while also spearheading strategic development of our program. With the pandemic and focus on hybrid work experiences I’m leading a number of pilots exploring the Future of Work and the experiences that enable the global Google community to thrive. I'm also the executive sponsor leading elimination of all single-use plastics from our Food operations which is a massive, multi-year identifying new solutions, systems, and technologies.
Do you have any advice for current students interested in exploring innovation and design?
The key is to focus on the industry/products/experiences you are most interested in and look for not only explicitly innovation roles, but also roles focused on strategic development, product growth, and even operations where much of the day-to-day innovation work actually sits. For example, I was leading a tech product team in financial services when I started Haas and I used that to move into a new innovation leadership role at Visa. While there I focused on food and hospitality industries as much as possible because of my personal passion for food, travel, and small business. This made it even easier to transition to my Food innovation role at Google.
What has been a highlight of your career so far?
A highlight of my career has been the global experiences I’ve been able to develop. At Visa, I pitched, led, and developed a new digital financial service for small businesses in emerging markets. We started this effort with women who sell fruits and vegetables at the daily markets in Nigeria. Meeting these women face-to-face, learning about their businesses and unique needs and challenges, and co-creating new digital experiences with them was not only rewarding but a lot of fun!
If you are interested in learning more about Ennis, please reach out to Neha Dutta to be added to a distribution list for an Alumni Ask Me Anything panel happening later this semester.
