Dear HCF,
Hope everyone is enjoying a restful Labor Day weekend. We look forward to seeing many of you at tonight's kick-off dinner at 1512 Walnut Street at 6:30pm!
In addition to our regular reflection, we have also included a list of other Haas and non-Haas-specific retreats, events, and resources for you think more deeply about your faith in this upcoming year. We encourage you to quickly skim these below and reach out to any of us if you would like more info.
Grace and Peace,
Anthony, Jake, and Megan
Weekly Reflection - Jake Qian (FTMBA '16)
A year ago, as I was trying to buy a new mattress (mold from the move) and a new car (failed smog testing), while stressing out about not having any friends here (probably my biggest fear in life), I envisioned what life would be like after a year at Haas. Ideally, it included a path to a happy end state: a nice place to settle down with a nice house to someday raise kids and a well-paying, vocationally-satisfying job. Well, a year later, I really have no better idea on what I'm going to do with my life.
A couple weeks ago I listened to a sermon on how life is a river, not a pond. Life changes, we change, the people and world around us change. Like companies who believe they can do the same thing forever and never innovate, my happy end state was really just a path to irrelevance. I think the biggest way I've grown over the past year is rolling with the path God has given me, and not needing to have my life planned out. It's still pretty hard sometimes, and I need to be careful balancing the fine line between "trusting God" and "laziness." But there's just something so peaceful about living well today, and letting God take care of the future.
So, my plan for this second year isn't focused around finding that perfect future career. I can explore jobs that seem interesting without the pressure of finding that perfect fit, and I can focus on simply living well: loving God, loving neighbor, enjoying my friends and family, and being a joy to others. Life is good.
