Subject: HCF Weekly Newsletter

Dear HCF,

Please join us in praying for our dear sister Alicea Wu in the EWMBA class of 2017 this week and for all who are struggling with illness themselves or in close family members.  You can read her update below in our weekly reflection.  And remember that there are often deep needs that go unspoken in our daily conversations...may we be listening and responding as Christ's hands and feet in the world this week.

As other announcements, we will be having an end-of-year fellowship lunch and prayer time at Libbey's house in South Berkeley this Saturday.  Please RSVP as soon as possible so that we can get a headcount and order food appropriately.

Finally, can you help us take our 2-minute survey about the Christians in Business class for next year?  We're trying to get as much planning done as possible before the end of the year and would love your input.

Grace and Peace,

Anthony, Jake, and Megan

Weekly Reflection - Alicea Wu (EWMBA '17)

My mom has cancer.  She has metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma (advanced stomach cancer).  I found out the day before my Accounting and Macroeconomics final last month.  Since then, she has had surgery to remove her stomach and had a temporary drain placed in her biliary duct as her tumor has spread to compress that duct.  She can barely eat, walk...or smile.  The doctors are not hopeful about her prognosis.  My parents do not speak much English and I am the only child, therefore, things have been especially hard on me during her diagnosis.

As a physician myself, I have seen many patients with serious illnesses.  However, when this happened to my mom, I felt so helpless.  Everyone tells her she needs to be strong to fight the cancer, but when I see her cry, I just wanted to cry with her.  My mom is also a believer, and I know I will see her for eternity, but that thought somehow did not comfort me.  I struggled a lot with how to put my trust in the Lord with her diagnosis.

However, Easter reminded me that Christ has conquered and overcome. Jesus has defeated death and the enemy.  We are free because of Christ!  I pray that I can continually be reminded of this.  One of my favorite verses is "I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." Phil 4:13.  I do not know how long God has planned for my mom, but I know that I can get through this difficult time with His strength.

Praises and Prayer Requests

PRAISE for the power and surety of the resurrection.  Praise that "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble."

PRAYER for healing for Alicea's mother and for strength and hope for Alicea during this difficult time.  Prayer that we in HCF would be unusually sensitive to the needs around us this week.

Please submit your own praises and prayer requests to your co-presidents and specify whether we have permission to include them in the newsletter.  Even if you don't want them to be public, we would be so delighted to share in your blessings and lift up your burdens.

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19
