BBSA Newsletter | 9-20-2019
Hi BBSA Fam,
First of all, a huge welcome to our new first years! We hope you are all getting into groove with classes and life at Haas - we know it can be a lot the first few weeks. We try to send out these newsletters every couple weeks to share any upcoming events and opportunities at Haas/in the broader Berkeley & Bay Area community that might be of interest. To kick things off, we are hosting a BBSA Happy Hour on Tuesday (10/1) from 5-7 pm at Freehouse - so please join us... first drink (at least) is always on us! :-)
Events:
- Michelle M. Wright, a professor at Emory University in Atlanta, offers a lecture entitled “Using Time to Represent Blackness” this Saturday (Sept 21) at 4 pm at BAMPFA (UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive). She argues that the complexity of black identities is poorly served by traditional representations of time—including those used by many academics in black studies. Drawing on the history of theoretical physics and concepts of race, gender, and sexuality in African diasporic writing, Wright shows how a “physics of blackness” is necessary for writing accurately and inclusively about blackness. See LINK.
- The 41st Annual National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Conference & Exposition convenes members, corporate and university partners, and some of the world’s most sought after thought leaders at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas for a week (Sept 24-28) of exploration in the areas of education, leadership, career opportunities, and networking connections that enable professional development. More than 10,000 professionals will travel to Houston to gain access to opportunities that only this national conference can offer. Please see their website for more details and to register.
