Join the following Facebook Groups: Events:
  • A lot of events/speaker series will happen during the weekdays, so you will miss out on them if you aren’t in the Bay area.
  • However, what you can do to PLAN AHEAD and fly in early/stay longer.
  • Some events/company visits might be on Fridays.
  • Sign up for clubs early
  • There will be events in the Seattle area sometimes
Hotels:
  • Hotel Durant is a popular but slightly expensive option.
  • Otherwise, you can look for AirBnB's in the area.
Scholarship: See "Outside Of Bay Area (OOBA) Scholarship"

Airline Tickets:
  • Most students fly in on Saturday mornings and fly back on Saturday night, while few fly in on Friday evenings.
  • We also stay over sometimes on Saturday nights to attend events with fellow classmates.
  • For classes at Berkeley:
    • you will normally take the 6 AM flight into Oakland airport.
    • Since 1st year classes get over at 6 PM, you will only make it for flights out of SFO.
    • We normally take the 8:30 PM flight, though there is a recently introduced second option of 9:30 PM as well.
    • You can either uber to the airport or have a classmate drive you to SF.
  • For classes at Canada College:
    • we normally fly into SJC airport
  • Best time to get tickets is June for Fall semester and Cyber Monday for Winter Semester
  • Apply for the Alaska airlines Visa signature card.
    • Alaska airlines have the flights most suited to our schedule.
    • Plus they have a fabulous mileage program, and you will soon become an MVP/MVP gold while travelling with them.
    • Alaska airlines also has a price match guarantee, so if the fares drop, you get reimbursed for the difference.
    • You can input your flight details at www.yapta.com. Yapta sends you notifications incase the price drops.
    • Email the Alaska airlines sales team. When we started, I emailed them asking if they could provide a bulk discount for flight fares since we represent substantial business for them (64 flights per person/year) times 4-5 students. They didn’t agree but bumped me to MVP status. Their email id is: SEA Sales sea.sales@alaskaair.com
    • Sign up for Alaska airline emails. They have deals around double miles etc
  • Sign up for TSA pre (If you are a citizen)

Berkeley EWMBA Guide for SoCal Area Commuters

  • You will likely be on a similar commuting schedule with other southern California commuters (LA, Orange County, etc..). Good idea to set up a facebook group for commuters in your year group.
  • Groups of more senior classes will become less active over time as the majority of SoCal commuters migrate to the Bay Area over the course of the program.

Airline Tickets:

  • Most students fly in on Saturday mornings and fly back on Saturday night, while few fly in on Friday evenings.
  • Most SoCal commuters choose Southwest Airlines, as flying continuously on this airline will give you A-List status prior to the completion of your first semester, which greatly simplifies your airport logistics.
  • Most Southwest flights from SoCal (SD, LA, Orange County, Burbank) arrive and depart OAK and SFO at roughly the same time, thereby allowing you a greater ability to share Uber/Lyft/Taxi costs with fellow Haas commuters.
  • While there aren’t really other options at OAK, United offers flights from SAN to SFO at rates comparable to Southwest. Virgin America also flies from SAN to SFO as a third option.
  • For classes at Haas, OAK is the most convenient airport for Saturday morning arrival.
  • For classes at Canada College, SFO is a convenient option. Haas also offers shuttle service from SFO/SJC for days when classes are held at Canada College.
  • Best time to get tickets is June for Fall semester and Cyber Monday for Winter Semester
  • We also stay over sometimes on Saturday nights to attend events with fellow classmates.

Transportation to/from class

  • For classes at Haas, there is no shuttle service to campus. Most commuters find it convenient to share Uber/Lyft fare, which usually will get you to Haas 5-10 min before classes start on Saturday morning.
  • After arriving at OAK, go to section 2E outside the terminal, where pickup is allowed for app enabled ride sharing services. You will most likely meet up with other SoCal Haas commuters there, as everyone from SoCal arrives at roughly the same time.
  • There is also a BART station at OAK if you have extra time. The BART won’t get you to class on time if you fly in on Saturday morning, but may be an option if you fly in on Friday night and don’t want to pay full fare for an Uber/Lyft. The closest BART station to the UC Berkeley campus is Downtown Berkeley.
  • For classes at Canada College, there is shuttle service to campus from both SFO and SJC. The shuttle from SFO leaves at 8:40am, which tends to cut it close to your arrival time. If you are going to be a little late, you can call the driver and he/she is usually willing to wait an extra few minutes. Pick-up is at the Southwest Airlines terminal.
