Year of the Ox
Hi [FIRST_NAME]! We hope you had a great start to the Lunar New Year. Over a billion people in China and millions around the world celebrate Lunar New Year, which began on February 12th in Asia. According to the Chinese zodiac, 2021 marks the year of the Ox. The Ox is a hardworking zodiac sign. It usually signifies movements so, hopefully, the world will be less static than last year and get moving again in the second half of the year. Read more

On April 6th, more than a dozen HTC members visited the Yammer office, hoping to learn more about one of the hottest start-ups in the valley. Yammer is truly disrupting the enterprise communications space. During the visit, HTC members had the chance to spend quality time with Yammer employees, to learn more about their industry and the enterprise social networking business, and to hear about the latest challenges Yammer is tackling. After an engaging conversation and a Q&A session, HTC members took an office tour and left with a great view of Yammer and where they will go!Read more
On Wednesday April 11, 60 HTC & DMEC members and alumni from a wide variety of companies around the Bay Area descended on Adobe's San Francisco office for an informal mixer.
Adobe generously sponsored the event, providing delicious food and an abundance of beer and wine in a very cool venue, while Diageo hosted a Don Julio tasting station where attendees could learn about tequila and taste 4 varieties of Don Julio! Read more
Last Friday, a group of HTC members were able to visit the Cisco campus. As part of the trek, Haasies were able to network with alums over lunch, learn more about the opportunities at Cisco and ask questions to a panel of employees that spanned many of the largest groups at the company. However, the highlight of the trek was testing Cisco’s Telepresence product and learning more about its products for sport’s stadiums and arenas. After hearing John Chambers speak about these products at Haas last semester, it was exciting to see them in action!Read more
On Friday February 4 th , Juniper hosted the Haas Tech Club in a Trek visit to its Sunnyvale headquarters. Several presenters shared with us their excitement about working at Juniper and the incredible trajectory of the company. While Juniper may not be a household name, we use their technology when we make a phone call or send an email from a smart phone. Read more
While most Haasies were spread out across the globe, a handful of us who were in Berkeley after the New Year, took the short flight down to Vegas to check out the world’s largest gathering of consumer electronics companies.
Tablets and 3D were clearly all the rage at this year’s CES. Nearly every major consumer electronics company had dozens of their version of the iPad available for attendees to test drive. Sony and Samsung wowed us with massive jumbo screens showcasing their 3D TV experience. Connected cars and smart appliances were also big showcase items at this year’s show; with Ford and GE unveiling some impressive products. Read more
This year we kicked off the HTC's first ever trip to sunny San Diego. We visited the beautiful Qualcomm office, took a photo near the epic Qualcomm patent wall and heard from Haas alumni working in the firm about entrepreneurial activities in this great company. If you’re a fan of bplan competitions, you can continue participating while working for Qualcomm - they have their own. The company is pushing hard to enhance mobile user experience with technologies like augmented reality and location based services, live presentation of which we saw in the Qualcomm Technology Labs. HTC will definately be going back next year!Read more
On Friday, October 22, the HTC organized its first-ever HTC BBQ Cook-Off. Rainy weather did not dampen our spirits. The HTC leadership team and the BBQ cook-off organizers (Tom LeSaffre, second-year MBA student, and Didem Ersoz, first-year MBA student), armed themselves with large umbrellas and set the grill up for the contestants. Thankfully, the rain did subside as the day went on. Read more
Deloitte Consulting Offers Insights on Cloud Computing
Chris Weitz from Deloitte Consulting visited Haas to share his thoughts on trends in Cloud Computing with members of the Haas Tech Club on the evening of October 20.
Some of his fascinating insights included The real power of Cloud Computing is that the information or processes simultaneously are everywhere and nowhere, making them very hard to kill (think Skynet). Read more
Mike Olson, an irreducible entrepreneur & technologist, speaking at UCB
On Wednesday, September 15, I attended an exciting on-campus presentation by Mike Olson, founder and CEO of Cloudera -- and one of the most eminent experts in open-source databases.
Formerly, Mike was co-founder, president, and CEO of Sleepycat (Berkeley DB). He also worked with Oracle's new Embedded Global Business Unit in the wake of the acquisition of Sleepycat. Before that, he was VP of Molecular Applications Group ("cratered," in his own words). Just after his studies at UC Berkeley, he spent four years in Europe working as a farmer and line cook before realizing what he wanted to do in life. Read more
When you think about disruptive innovations of the past decade, cloud computing and virtualization certainly have to be among the top of this list. Earlier today, I joined fellow HTC member for a trip into the heart of the Silicon Valley to rub shoulders with executives and engineers from some of the world's most prominent high-tech companies. At CloudPlay, we heard from the CTOs at EMC, HP Cloud Services, and SAP as well as the founders from various companies delivering IT services powered by the cloud.Read more
Earlier this month, HTC and DMEC co-hosted the Consumption Function for Days at Haas I. It was a huge success with a great turnout of both current and future Haas students. We enjoyed delicious food and drink and were able to meet many amazing prospective students. It was exciting to show off the fun Haas culture and we hope that the new admits will join HTC in the fall! Read more
CFC and HTC Take The Plunge To Support Special Olympics
This past Saturday, CFC and the HTC joined forces to raise funds and awareness for The Special Olympics.
After spending some time volunteering at the registration station and meeting new people from the community, Tim Potter, John Park, Dan Parker and Brooks Kincaid took the Polar Plunge into the San Francisco Bay with hundreds of warm-hearted supporters dressed in wacky costumes. Read more
After seeing how much fun working the Crunchies was, HTC went on the road again to volunteer at a ChicMeetsGeek event on February 4th. The event strives to bring together prominent entrepreneurs and figures in the technology startup industry with local chic celebrities to inspire each other through sharing their stories. Read more
Over the winter break, a number of HTC members travelled to China as part of the annual Haas China Trek – a 10-day trip to Shanghai and Beijing organized completely by Haas students. In addition to touring many of the famous historical sites, immersing ourselves in the city nightlife, and consuming way too much local Chinese food, we met with executives from a variety of companies. Most notable corporate visits included Google China, Huawei, Innovation Works, and Tencent. Also, many of us had a chance to meet with government officials at the US Embassy in Beijing – an experience that exposed us to the resources and people that are vital to successfully expanding a business into China.
